Traffic cop’s samaritan act draws thrashing from mob

As Traffic Sergeant Biswajit Baidya arrived on the spot and tried to stop the angry locals from setting fire to the minibus,he was beaten up by a bunch of hoodlums. However,Baidya,who was the only policeman there,did not budge an inch and stopped the miscreants from setting fire to the minibus till all the passengers managed to escape.

As more policemen arrived,he was finally rescued and sent to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. He was discharged later. “A policeman’s job is to protect public property and you will have to do it even if you are alone. I will keep on doing it in future too,” said a confident Baidya after he was released from the hospital.

Elated by Baidya’s bravery and commitment,Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti said that the sergeant will be rewarded for his act. “Baidya has done an excellent job and he will be rewarded for that,” said Chakrabarti. Meanwhile,the autorickshaw driver too has been admitted to the hospital.
