The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the BJP leader said that the Mamata Banerjee-led government would not survive beyond 2025 once it gets 35 seats in the next year’s Lok Sabha elections. Accusing the BJP of hatching a conspiracy against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the TMC said Shah’s claims of “toppling the government” were concerning.
“Amit Shah made a flimsy declaration that if the BJP would get 35 seats from Bengal in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, he would topple the democratically-elected Bengal government in 2025. Shah’s claims of toppling the government are concerning. Being the Home Minister of the country, he has accepted that a conspiracy is being hatched against Bengal,” the TMC said in a statement.
Calling Shah a “seasonal bird”, the TMC said termed his public rally in Birbhum a “flop show”.
“He (Shah) can dream of winning 35 seats, just like bagging 200 plus seats in the 2021 Assembly polls. No one in Bengal or in Birbhum gave importance to his meeting… This time, BJP will struggle to even get one seat in the Lok Sabha elections,” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.
“We are all aware of your lies, your hate-laden agenda… Clearly, no one in Bengal is interested in your trash-talk, your lies, and your hate-laden agenda. Go spew venom elsewhere,” the party tweeted as Shah arrived in the state for a two-day visit.
“Amit Shah spoke about the Ram Navami procession. Let me remind him that his cadre Sumit Shaw, who was seen brandishing weapons in the Ram Navami procession, was arrested from Bihar. As Union Home Minister, can’t he condemn it?” the TMC spokesperson added.
On Shah’s dynasty charge on TMC, Kunal Ghosh said, “He (Shah) was sitting with Adhikari Private Limited and then talking about dynastic politics. He is trying to throw stones at us while living in a glass house.” Ghosh was referring to BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari whose father and brother are also in politics.
Shah in his speech had accused Mamata Banerjee of trying to make her bhatija (nephew) – Abhishek Banerjee — the next chief minister of the state.
In a tweet tagging Amit Shah, Abhishek Banerjee, who is a TMC MP and party’s national general secretary, wrote: “If my existence pains you to this extent, then release the Rs 1.15 lakh crore rightfully due to my state and I’ll withdraw myself from the political arena.”
TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray also slammed Shah for not speaking on issues raised by them.
“Yesterday, we raised a few issues for you (Shah) to respond to. Unfortunately during today’s meeting, you didn’t address any of these issues. Why has the Central Government stopped payment of more than Rs 7,000 crore in the MGNREGA accounts of West Bengal? Why did your party indulge in Ram Navami violence in Howrah? Today, we are surprised to see you talking about scams without mentioning that one of your Union Ministers came to Bengal and met coal smugglers. The leader (referring to Suvendu Adhikari) who was sitting with you on the dais is the one named in the CBI’s FIR,” said Ray.
Responding to Shah’s claim that the West Bengal government has blocked the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme in the state, the TMC said, “The Mamata Banerjee government has a well-functioning Swasthya Sathi scheme of its own, which provides free medical insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh for every citizen of the state. Over 2.4 crore families avail universal healthcare under the West Bengal government’s Swasthya Sathi scheme. On the contrary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ayushman Bharat scheme has a complex eligibility criterion that leaves out vulnerable sections of the society.”
