TMC and BJP councillors allegedly got into a scuffle during the monthly session of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Saturday. The ruling TMC has a majority in KMC. In the 144-member civic body, TMC has 140 councillors, BJP three and CPI (M) one.

According to reports, after Opposition councillors didn’t put forward a proposal or question during the session, KMC Mala Roy questioned BJP leaders over their silence.

In response, BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh said, “What’s the use of asking questions?” TMC leaders also alleged that BJP councillors called them “thieves”. The two sides continued to trade barbs and the altercation turned ugly after they got into an alleged scuffle.

A video of the purported incident has surfaced on social media. The purported video also shows TMC’s Asim Bose and Sajal Ghosh involved in an “altercation.”

Later, BJP councillor Ravi Ojha and TMC councillor Sudip Polley were also involved in the altercation. To control the situation, Mayor Firhad Hakim and Member Mayor In Council Debashish Kumar came forward and convinced TMC councillors to step back. Meanwhile, three BJP councillors also walked out.

Accusing TMC leaders of beating them up, Sajal Ghosh said, “TMC wants to stop us from pointing out the corruption in distribution of school dresses. There is corruption in every sector. If you protest against it, they will beat you up.”

Denying the BJP councillor’s allegations, TMC’s Asim Basu said, “They called us and our top leadership as thieves. This cannot be tolerated every time. There was no fighting,… just an altercation.”

Hakim said, “They do not have any issue, so they are doing this. When we accuse Mehul Choksey and Vijay Mallya (of corruption), we never say PM Narendra Modi is corrupt. We know how to respect a chair. But, they (BJP) always say that Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee are corrupt. That can not be tolerated.”.
