‘Third front will need common minimum programme as glue’

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday termed the talks of forming a non-Congress,non-BJP front “insignificant” unless and until the constituent parties of such a front chalk out a “common minimum programme (CMP)”.

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday termed the talks of forming a non-Congress,non-BJP front “insignificant” unless and until the constituent parties of such a front chalk out a “common minimum programme (CMP)”.

Speaking at an event to mark the birth anniversary of CPM leader Anil Biswas, the politburo member said: “We are working on the common minimum programme and a third front as well. We can only build an alternative front to the BJP and Congress,if we have a

strong CMP.”

“What will be the alternative policies regarding land, employment, internal security, foreign policy, education, food security and other issues? A third front should be formed on the basis of alternative policies,” he added.

The CPM’s effort to build a third front comes in the wake of arch-rival Mamata Banerjee’s push for another front called “federal front” comprising regional players. Bhattacharjee, however, played down the Trinamool’s effort to stitch an alliance saying: “That (federal front) cannot be an alternative.”

He,at the same time, conceded that forming an alternative front won’t be easy “as most of the parties are divided over several issues, especially over religion and caste”.
