Triple Aces are a young rap trio that’s trying to popularise hip-hop in colleges

When he’s not aspiring to be a journalist and writer,20-year-old Rishabh Nair is penning lyrics, rhyming and rapping them out in front of a mirror. His friends Roopam Singh,20,and Rajat Kukreja,19,meanwhile,get their own lyrics ready for the same song. The trio call themselves Triple Aces,a rap group that’s trying to warm the college crowd to hip-hop.

“We never decided that it would be just three rappers but not many people of our age are into hip-hop and rap. But we hope to popularise these genres through our performances,” says Nair.

They’re only three-months-old but the boys have been quick to get their look and stage names in place. “Each of us has an alter-ego,we’re rappers who have different skills that we bring together. My avatar is called Arm Candy,Roopam is Alien or Sin and Rajat is Kuki,” says Nair gravely.

The boys study at IP University and have come up with a model to publicise their craft. “Since we’re college students,we decided to perform at other colleges. Our music is about stuff that is socially relevant to us and sometimes just about random things,” says Singh.

Their first major performance was at Lady Shriram College and they penned a song for the girls. “It worked! The girls liked us,the show was a hit and we performed an encore,” recalls Nair with some excitement. Since then,Triple Aces have been performing at colleges under IP University and hope that word of mouth publicity will get them more shows.

They’ve recorded four songs among which We put you out of order and I’m drunk and high tonight have been getting regular play on their Facebook page. While Nair and Singh rap in English,Kukreja raps in Punjabi and the desi hip-hop trio are inspired by Eminem,Tupac,Ludacris and other commercial American hip-hop and R&B artistes. “We are working on a mixed tape of about five songs. We plan to record an eight-track album too, titled Ready to Die,” says Nair. Peace out.
