Tewari dares Modi to public debate on Gujarat governance

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Thursday challenged Narendra Modi to a public debate on the Gujarat governance model.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Thursday challenged Narendra Modi to a public debate on the Gujarat governance model. He was responding to questions about the Gujarat Chief Minister’s criticism of the UPA government for the country’s present economic situation.

“Modi is in the habit of making one or the other statement daily…If he is so confident of the governance model of Gujarat,he should come and debate it with us any day at a place and a format of his choice. It will be crystal clear how much strength that governance model has…People of the country will judge… they would be able to sift the fact from the fiction,” Tewari said, also taking a dig at the “open” violation of human rights in Gujarat.

Reminded about Modi’s penchant for challenging UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to similar exchanges,Tewari said,“He should be able to tackle me first,if he is a CM,I am a Central minister. In any case he is a man with such questionable standing in his own party that (Madhya Pradesh CM) Shivraj Singh Chouhan is not even willing to use his picture.”

Tewari rubbished the BJP’s incredulity of the Planning Commission data on poverty. “This is actually the difference of ideologies. While the UPA is of the belief that poverty should be removed from the country, the BJP believes in removing the poor. Rate of reduction of poverty has been far higher during the UPA regime than during the NDA rule. Our belief is that hunger should go away. They believe those hungry should go away,” he said.
