As the instances of violence in colleges across the state continue unabated,the largest Left-backed teachers organisation at the college level will urge Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to swiftly deal with these cases.
The West Bengal College University Teachers Association (WBCUTA) has sought an appointment with the chief minister to bring the instances of campus violence to his notice.
We will submit him a deputation regarding violence across the state colleges at the instigation by outsiders. In many cases police also reacted late, said WBCUTA general secretary Tarun Patra.
Outsiders are often seen in colleges,they enter into altercations with students,resulting in violence, said Gokulananda Goswami,a teacher at Fakirchand
College and an executive committee member of WBCUTA.
The WBCUTA has decided to hold a convention at every college where violence has been reported. The convention will be attended by teachers,non-teaching staff,students and local public representatives to ease the tension in colleges.
Cases of unrest and trouble have been reported from colleges in South 24-Parganas,Howrah,Hooghly,Malda and West Midnapore,in many of these cases where teachers had to bear the burnt. At Mograhat College in South 24-Parganas,teachers went for a pen down strike after clashes between the student groups.
In another instance,following violence and gherao at Fakirchand College on August 21 and 22,teachers went for a strike and classes began from August 28 only after an assurance from the local police and administration.
The V-C of the University of Calcutta has written to the chief minister about the unrest in the colleges on the advice of the syndicate,one of the highest decision-making bodies of the varsity.
After the Lok Sabha polls,teachers said,instances of violence are on the rise. With political violence spilling into colleges,the teachers union is keen to insulate colleges from it.
