SUCI bandh gets Trinamool thumbs down

The Trinamool Congress has decided to oppose the 12-hour Bangla bandh called by its alliance partner SUCI on November 24.

The Trinamool Congress has decided to oppose the 12-hour Bangla bandh called by its alliance partner SUCI on November 24.

The SUCI has called the bandh to protest against the price rise. SUCI’s state secretary Provash Ghosh had announced the decision on Tuesday, while he was in Delhi to attend a party conference.

Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Partha Chatterjee today said: “We are against bandhs and there is no question of supporting the SUCI-sponsored Bangla bandh. Frequent bandhs cause major discomfort to the people. We do not support this type of frequent bandh calls.”

Chatterjee said they had already launched movements in the state against the price rise.

“There is no need to disturb common people by holding another bandh. We are protesting against the price rise and other issues related to law and order problem. We don’t feel a bandh is necessary to oppose the issue,” he added.

The Congress, too, has opposed the bandh in principle. “We don’t support bandh. But our core committee will meet on Saturday to decide whether our party will support or oppose the bandh called by the SUCI,” West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) working president Pradip Bhattacharjee said.

The state BJP,meanwhile, has also called a bandh on November 30 on price rise and sought support from other parties to their call.

In a letter to the SUCI chief, state BJP president Rahul Sinha said that earlier both the parties had observed bandh on the same day on a common issue — like atrocities in Nandigram. “On the same issue why will we observe bandhs twice? People will suffer due to this. So I have requested SUCI leaders to consider our proposal,” said Sinha.
