The stalemate over the post of Mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation continued today with the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, both claimants for the mayoral office, failing to reach a consensus.
Senior Trinamool leader and Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Partha Chatterjee today met two Congress leaders of Siliguri,Biswaranjan Sarker and Shankar Malakar, and discussed the issue.
No decision could be reached. Both the sides sent their reports to their respective leaders; the Congress to Pranab Mukherjee and the Trinamool Congress to party chief Mamata Banerjee, Pradip Bhattacharya, state Congress vice-president,said.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool councillors elected Gautam Deb as leader of their unit at the civic body.
Initially, the Trinamool councillors had a meeting where they made me leader. Later, councillors from both the parties met. We thanked each other for making the alliance a success and promised to make make all efforts to strengthen it, Deb said from Siliguri.
Chatterjee also said the talks were going on but nothing concrete has come out of it.
