Six people,including three of a family,died due to landslides in Kurseong area of Darjeeling district following heavy rains and floods on Sunday morning.
One of the three roads connecting Darjeeling with Siliguri,National Highway 55,was also blocked by the landslides.
We believe lives of about 14,000 to 15,000 people have been affected. We have arranged for relief materials like tarpoulin and dry food and are sending them to the affected areas, S K Gupta,District Magistrate of Darjeeling told The Indian Express.
The landslides occurred at various places,including tea gardens,along the National Highway 55 connecting Kurseong with Siliguri and Darjeeling,as also in areas like Pankhabari and Rohini.
We visited the families of the victims and gave them financial help. We will arrange for the other affected families also, Gupta said.
He said police and fire brigade personnel are engaged in rescuing the injured and those trapped by the landslides.
