Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said she had granted the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) June 14 as the date for a meeting on the recommendation of the state-appointed committee on expanding the jurisdiction of the proposed Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA). The GJM had sought a discussion with the CM in this regard.
Mamata added she had invited some organisations from the civil society of Darjeeling, which, too, had sought an appointment with her. We want both Darjeeling and the plains in Dooars and Terai to live in peace and harmony. Let all the parties abide by the GTA agreement, Mamata said.
In Darjeeling, the Morcha leaders said they hoped the Chief Minister will reconsider their suggestion of conceding more than five mouzas to the GTA.
According to sources, the Morcha, which is faced with an internal feud on whether to go for a full-fledged agitation or participate in the GTA elections, will suspend their protest programmes once they get a positive word from the Chief Minister.
Yesterday,in response to Justice Shyamal Sen committees recommendations of allotting only five mouzas to the GTA,the GJM had announced a series of agitations that included observing a 72-hour bandh in the hills and the Dooars starting July 2,burning of copies of GTA and resignation of the four MLAs of GJM on July 17. It also declared that it would declare its next course of agitation at a rally on July 27 at Darjeeling.
