Singer-composer Sanjay Chakraborty arrested for alleged sexual assault of minor

The accused, who holds music classes in Kolkata, is the brother of well-known musician Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, police said. Sanjay Chakraborty, who is in his 50s, was on Wednesday produced in a Kolkata court that remanded him in police custody till November 18, police said.

THE KOLKATA Police arrested a singer-composer, Sanjay Chakraborty, in Mumbai on Monday, two months after the family of a teenage girl filed a police complaint alleging that he sexually assaulted her, officers said.

The accused, who holds music classes in Kolkata, is the brother of well-known musician Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, police said. Sanjay Chakraborty, who is in his 50s, was on Wednesday produced in a Kolkata court that remanded him in police custody till November 18, police said.

According to police sources, the parents of the girl filed a complaint against Chakraborty in August but Chakraborty left for Mumbai.

A Kolkata Police team traced Chakraborty and apprehended him from the residence of another singer, they said. The accused was arrested from an apartment in Mumbai’s Kandivali (East) on the basis of a tip-off and technical surveillance.

According to the sources, the incident was first reported by the girl’s family on August 29 at a police station in another district of West Bengal. The case was then transferred to a police station in Kolkata.

The Kolkata Police registered a case against the singer on September 9 under IPC sections pertaining to molestation and insulting the modesty of a woman, along with sections 10 and 12 of the POCSO Act.

Reacting to the development, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, in a post on X, made an apparent reference to some leading musicians from Bengal. “Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty’s brother Sanjay Chakraborty was arrested from another singer’s flat in Mumbai. Arijit, Abhijit, Shreya from Mumbai, I hope all will make a statement on this… Are you selective revolutionaries?”
