Ramp blues

It’s a hangar in the middle of nowhere, but the venue of the first ever Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW),which kicked off this Thursday, does have its charms. The planks that double up for seat for instance, they are in keeping with the worldwide trend of minimalist interiors and probably aid your reiki needs. The musty carpets that cover the floors add drama to the interiors, more so if you happen to spot a dainty socialite trip over them. The freshly painted walls welcome you a little too warmly. So much so that they leave telltale marks all over your newly washed kurta. And then of course there is the ramp,a startling white platform which is crying out ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

All said and done,it cannot be denied that the KFW has managed to add some excitement to the otherwise dull Kolkata social scene. The sprawling lawn of PC Chandra Greens, the venue of the show, was abuzz with activity on the opening day. Willowy models, mostly Mumbai and Delhi imports, sauntered in and out of the venue as gaping Kolkata media persons swallowed them in along with giant-sized muffins which were distributed free from a coffee counter.

The innaugral show which was that of Bibi Russell reflected the designer’s commitment to natural fabrics. The clothes on display were colourful and funky,as were the accessories. Shane and Falguni,Wendell Rodricks and Sharbari Dutta were the other designers who showed their collections on the fisrst day of this 4-day event.
