Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee skipped his visit to the Railway programme at Sagardighi in Murshidabad, which he was to attend with Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The minister dropped out after the helicopter he was to take developed some technical snags around 10 am,said West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Manas Bhuniya. Congress leaders indicate that the eleventh-hour cancellation is significant in view of the trouble brewing over Adhir Choudhurys boycott of the function. The partys state unit is backing him fully.
Mukherjee and Banerjee were scheduled to travel together in that helicopter and reach Sagardighi Maidan. After attending the programme, the Finance minister and Banerjee were scheduled to go to Balurghat together to lay the foundation stone for the construction of three new lines from Balurghat to Hilli,Kaliayagunj to Buniadpur and Gazole to Itahar.
The programme, which was supposed to start at noon, was rescheduled to 5 pm after Mukherjee cancelled his plans and Banerjee took a train to reach Murshidabad.
I keep my words and it has never happened that I have skipped a programme in which I have promised to go, said Mamata Banerjee,at the rally in Sagardighi.
We had scheduled this programme here today according to the convenience of Union minister Pranab Mukherjee since this project comes within his constituency. But due to certain problem,he was unable to attend, she added.
