Call it a post-Aila afterthought, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education is set to introduce a course on disaster management in its work education and physical education papers.
While these papers are compulsory for the students of Classes VI to VIII,they are optional in Classes IX and X.
We are working on developing a module and orient teachers to train students on disaster management. To develop the module,we are taking the help of academicians in geology and oceanography, along with experts from the state Disaster Management department, said Board Secretary Partha Roy.
He added that in consultation with the experts, around 30 teachers will come up with modules for different classes.
Once the course content is ready, the Board will train some teachers as key resource persons (KRPs),who in turn will train others.
According to Board officials, the disaster management course will deal with areas like landslide-prone North Bengal, floods in South 24-Parganas,East Midnapore and other parts of state.
As part of the curriculum, students will also be taught where to take shelter during floods, how to preserve water, etc. While physical education will lay more stress on the activities, work education will provide knowledge on how to sustain oneself during calamities.
