Parties get green code

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board has issued a set of ‘green’ guidelines to the political parties urging them to adopt green practices during the Assembly election campaign.

The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has issued a set of ‘green’ guidelines to the political parties urging them to adopt green practices during the Assembly election campaign.

“During election campaigns, huge quantities of the waste materials are generated from preparation of flags, festoons, banners, and the proper disposal of such materials pose a huge problem. Also, there are other issues which cause environmental hazards during campaigning,” said WBPCB chairman P N Roy.

“Considering the provisions of different environment norms, green guidelines have been prepared and the political parties have requested to follow the rules for the sake of the pollution free environment,” Roy added.

The set of guidelines have been forwarded to all the 24 political parties, which will contest in Assembly polls.

Stating that the panel could not penal actions against the erring candidates or the outfits,Roy said they could only appeal them to follow the given guidelines. The aspects of the campaigning which bothers the panel most are use of loudspeakers,vehicles,diesel-run generator sets, plastic, putting up hoarding and banners on trees and others. The board is also set to issue specific guidelines for each of these categories.
