Panel sends show-cause to JU for ‘flouting norms’

The UGC has sought a report from the university over this and its representatives will visit the campus on Wednesday.

The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has issued a show-cause notice to the JU for flouting the guidelines of the Supreme Court and the University Grants Commission (UGC) on ragging.

The UGC guidelines state that freshers (first-year students) should be allocated separate hostel blocks with monitored access to seniors. The UGC has sought a report from the university over this and its representatives will visit the campus on Wednesday.

“The university has been asked to reply within two days as why action should not be taken against it for flouting the law,” WBCPCR chairperson Ananya Chakraborty said.

Meanwhile, several students’ unions including the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad took out rallies over the student’s death. Hitting out at the TMC government, Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar said, “The university authorities didn’t implement UGC guidelines properly. The state government should apologise to the people for this incident.”

TMC chief spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “The university should make efforts to ensure surveillance at hostels. Action must be taken against those involved in such incidents.” Also, the family conducted the deceased’s funeral ceremony in Nadia district on Monday.
