The researchers at Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) have come up with a technology of Internet transmission through electric signals. About 80 computers at two housing estates and the CESC office in central Kolkata are connected to the World Wide Web through this alternative.
Since last two years, the researchers at BESU along with CESC officials were working on the project of providing broadband connectivity through underground and overhead power lines.
The project has been sponsored by Department of Information Technology (DIT),Government of India.
The two housing estates where this alternative Internet connectivity is in application are Abhyudaya Housing Complex near Ruby General Hospital and Panchasayar Housing Society near Garia.
Selected residents who have been provided the Internet connection through powerline are satisfied with the service.
Internet signals from the service providers are injected with the power signal and the signal without colliding with other signal can be availed from each plug point of the house using a modem like device called Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), said Pabitra Kumar Ray,the principal investigator of the project.
Ray is a professor of Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at BESU.
Ray pointed out that in this technology one does not necessarily require a telephone connection and there is no need for another set of wiring.
The signal quality is comparable or even better than the existing ones. The price at this moment is Rs 600 per household and it is expected to come down, said Ray.
According to him, they are also in process of transmitting Voice Over Internet Protocol and images through the it. The researchers are hopeful that the new technology will prove to be a significant leap in providing Internet connectivity to rural.
Usually the projects are completed and remain in the four walls of the university, said Ray.
However this technology has now successfully reached to the people, Ray added.
