(Express Photo) A day after nine people died in different districts due to rain and squall in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the family members of the deceased. Although the Cyclone Mocha didn’t make a landfall in the state, within 24 hours of its occurrence, heavy thunderstorms and rain lashed several districts of the state.
According to the reports, the nine deaths included that of a Howrah student in Botanical Garden area. The minor girl died after coming in contact with a live wire while returning from her tuition classes.
Besides, a man died in Bahira Kulpara area under Uluberia police station in Kolkata after a mud house collapsed due to the force of the rain on Monday.
According to the weather department, thunderstorms are likely to occur in various parts of the state throughout the week. Many trees were uprooted in different parts of the state capital due to squall on Monday.
According to the Met office, a district-level weather warning for sub-Himalyan regions of West Bengal like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Aliporduar, Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakhsin Dinajpur and Malda indicated that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely at a few places.
According to the weather department, from May 16-21, weather warnings have been issued for Gangetic regions of West Bengal like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Howrah, Kolkata, Purulia, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman, Purba Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia. The weather forecast suggests thunderstorms, gusty winds at a speed of 40-50 km/ph and rainfall at a few places in these districts.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also met the family members of a woman, who along with her daughter, was allegedly electrocuted in Ekbalpur area in Kolkata on Tuesday. The CM was accompanied by Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee. The CM also announced financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh for the members of the affected families.
On Sunday, a woman, her daughter and son-in-law were injured after coming in contact with electricity wires in Ekbalpur. While the two women died in hospital, the man is undergoing treatment. “I met the families (of the deceased). I have announced financial assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh for the two families,” the CM said.
