The prime accused in the Swapna Chakraborti murder case,Rakesh Mishra, was produced at ACJM court in Sealdah on Saturday after he was brought to the city from Bastar. He has been remanded in police custody till June 30.

The body of Swapna,a resident of Baishakhi in Salt Lake, was recently found near Canal East Road at Narkeldanga. Probe revealed that Mishra was living with Swapna at her father’s house. “The accused has confessed to his crime. We suspect he murdered Swapna because he suspected her of having affair with another man,” said DC (DD) Javed Shamim.

Soon after Swapna was identified, police raided several places looking for Mishra and finally found him in a Chhattisgarh hospital. Investigation revealed that the burn injuries with which Mishra was admitted to the hospital in Chhattisgarh were sustained when he was trying to destroying the evidence.

A city police team then went to his residence at Chattisgarh and interrogated his wife, following which Rakesh was arrested.
