An emerging trend that can radically change the profiles across corporate boardrooms is the entry of more girls into the premier management institutes. The premier management institutes like the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta in the past had a miniscule representation of girls but this year things are set to change.
According to Prashant Mishra, the chairman of the post-graduate programme at IIM-C,over 40 girls have registered for the course and more are likely to enroll in the programme.
We have not taken any extra measures to improve the number of girl students in our courses. This is something that has happened on its own, said Mishra.
Another interesting factor is that the girls have made most of the quota benefit. According to IIM-C officials, about 25 per cent seats of the quota seats have been filled by women candidates. We are not very sure why more girls are their in the reserved category. However,an increase in the number of girls is always welcome, added Mishra.
In 2008-09,the percentage of girls was only about 7 per cent. In 2009-10,it jumped to 10 per cent. This could be a social change where girls are keen on management education, taking up more challenges across the sectors. There are more girls taking CAT and that is why there has been a change, said Samyukktha Thirumeni,a second-year student at IIM-C.
