The Alipur fast track court on Monday convicted Deepak Bhattacharjee for causing the death of his son Biswadip on January 8,2007. The court found him guilty under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. The punishment will be announced tomorrow.

Bhattacharjee had hit Biswadip (14),a former sub-junior table tennis champion,on the head with a bat. He was admitted to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Subsequently, his mother Papiya had lodged a compliant with the police against her husband.

Biswadip used to practise table tennis with his nine-year-old sister Neha at their home in Regent Park. As per the routine, they started practice at 7.30 am on January 8,2007. After sometime, however,Biswadip felt uneasy and left the room ignoring his father’s orders to continue practising,at which angry Bhattacharjee hit his son with a bat.

Papiya said in the FIR that Bhattacharjee used to beat his son for petty mistakes. Neha also told police that her father would hit them if they did not play well.

After the verdict,Papiya said her husband should be punished by the court.
