Left Front chairman Biman Bose on Wednesday blamed the GTA agreement and the ‘inner contradictions’ in it for the unrest in the region.

Bose said the contradictions in the GTA agreement, which was signed in June,2011 after the Trinamool government came to power, sowed the seeds of the present violence in the Dooars and Terai regions.

He also added that the state government’s haste to “solve the problem of Darjeeling hills” caused the present unrest in the area. “The Trinamool government claimed that it had sorted out the problem within 17 days after it assumed the office. If the issue is solved why fresh trouble is cropping up in the Dooars and Terai regions, and why there is unrest? Moreover, why the senior leaders of GJM are threatening the state government that they would not allow any representative of the government and political parties to enter Darjeeling?” Bose told mediapersons.

He said the Left Front parties had asked the government to discuss the issue at all-party meeting but the government did not pay heed to it. “We have always seen that the problem was there in Darjeeling as the Gorkha people demanded separate statehood. But this time the problem spilled over in the plains. We do not understand why a committee was formed to determine the territory of the GTA when it is mentioned in the agreement that the GTA will be formed in the Darjeeling,Kalimpong and Kurseong areas,” added Bose.
