Mamata dumps ‘bogus’ voters’ list at EC door

According to her findings,the total number of bogus voters in south Kolkata constituency is about 46,000. “Of this,11,320 are names of people who have been holding multiple Elector’s Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) under the same name,” she said.

“In some cases,only the father’s name has been changed. In other cases,the address has been changed and in some the religion has been changed,” she added.

According to her estimate,in the Jadavpur constituency alone,there are 4,500-5,000 bogus voters. She added that in the whole of West Bengal,around 70 per cent are bogus voters.

In response to her complaints,Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami asked the state’s Chief Electoral Officer Debashish Sen to look into the matter. “We have asked the CEC to immediately rectify the list and we have been assured that the panel will look into it,” Banerjee said.

She has also asked the CEC to look into the law and order situation in the state. “Law and order in the state has become the CPM’s order. We have asked the CEC to take stock of the situation. The voting in all the three phases have to be under the surveillance of the paramilitary forces,” Banerjee added.

She has also requested the CEC to keep a check on the EVM machines so that they are not tampered with. “In the last election many EVM machines had been tampered with and programmed according to the convenience of the ruling party. The people did not give us less votes. Their votes were tampered with,” the Trinamool chief said.

“This time I told my party members that we cannot win the elections just by campaigning. We have to keep a check on bogus voters in every house,ever lane,every borough and every constituency,” Banerjee added.
