A CBI team was on Thursday denied permission to interrogate jailed state Transport Minister Madan Mitra, an accused in the in the multi-crore Saradha scam, at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he is undergoing treatment.

Mitra’s lawyers opposed the move saying that the minister was severely sick and that the central agency had questioned him on January 20, but found no fresh evidence against him.

Earlier, the CBI had told Alipore court that jail authorities have failed to furnish details on how many days Mitra had spent in jail and the number of days he has been at the hospital while being in judicial custody. Following a court order in this regard, the Alipore jail authorities submitted a report before it on August 17. The report stated that while Mitra had spent 45 days in jail, he has been at SSKM’s Woodburn ward for 196 days till August 17. It added that he has not returned to jail since February 11.
