Left accuses Governor of partisanship

The volatile relationship between the state government and Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi took a grim turn on Friday.

The volatile relationship between the state government and Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi took a grim turn on Friday. The ruling Marxists accused the Governor of being partisan in view of his statement indicting the government for failure to contain violence in the state.

“We would humbly like to submit that the constitutional head of the state should exhibit more apparent neutrality while making a statement in public. If worship of force in all its forms has to be eradicated, the way the highest office of the state behaves should also call for a meaningful change,” said a statement issued by the Left Front Committee.

At its outset, the Marxists lamented that no statement was issued from Raj Bhavan when Maoists owned responsibility for killing CPM members and their attempt to kill the chief minister.

“We attract his kind attention to the fact the violence started before the Lok Sabha elections and was targeted against the CPM and the Left Front in general¿ 103 CPM workers were killed in the last one year… the self-styled Maoists take pride in openly claiming their ownership of most of these ghastly murders and their attempt to kill the chief minister of the state¿ we have no knowledge of any public statement released from Raj Bhavan on such occasions,” the statement said.

The statement also said that the Governor did not make any distinction between those killed and the killers. It also raised the question whether the Governor sent any report to the Centre regarding the role of some Trinamool Congress Union Ministers, who, the CPM alleged, were abetting violence.

“The role of some Union ministers of the Trinamool Congress in encouraging this ‘tandava’ has beenamply explained in the memorandum submitted by a delegation of Left Front MLAs to the Governor…we are not aware if the honourable Governor has sent any report to the Union government on the involvements of these Union ministers in this matter,” the statement said.

The state government, meanwhile, claimed that it has not received any written instruction from the Governor. “But so far as violence is concerned, the chief minister is equally worried,” said Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti. “The Home Secretary and DG have been told to take action. We are sure the actions will bear fruit.”

West Bengal Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh, meanwhile, said,“the recovery of illegal arms and ammunition is a regular process and we do not do it on the advice of any person”. In his statement, the Governor had urged the state administration to “move swiftly to recover illegal arms”.

The Congress said the Governor’s statement was timely. “We are followers of Gandhian principles. It’s the CPM which is indulging in violence,” said Manas Bhuniya,Congress Legislature Party leader.

The Trinamool Congress reacted sharply to the Left Front’s statement. “The Marxists are the fountainhead of all violence, they have no right to criticise others,” said Saugata Roy,Union Minister of State for Urban Development and a senior TMC leader.
