A 17-YEAR-OLD pregnant girl, who had got married 22 days ago, died under mysterious circumstances at Khidirpur village in Malda district.
The deceased, Noori Khatoon, fell unconscious on Monday. Five-months pregnant, she was taken to the Malda Medical College, where she was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
Noori’s mother, Dugni Bibi, has accused her son-in-law, Ahmed Sheikh, of killing her. She has filed a police complaint against the 21-year-old and three other members of his family.
Police said that Noori, a Class VII student at Daulatnagar High School, was in a relationship with Ahmed, who used to study in Class XII at the same school. During their relationship, the girl became pregnant.
Sources said when Noori’s family came to know of her pregnancy, they wanted Ahmed to marry her but his family refused.
Later, following intervention of a kangaroo court, the two got married on July 17.
“The family members of the boy did not accept Noori and used to torture her. Late last night, we were told that she had become unconscious. We reached their place and took her to Malda Medical College, where doctors said she was no more,” said Dugni Bibi.
Noori’s uncle, Pasua Sheikh, said: “Since her marriage, she was being tortured. Marks of torture were found on her body. We believe she was beaten up and then strangled.”
“We have received a complaint against Ahmed, his parents Nazim Ahmed and Ramala Bibi, and Ahmed’s sister Sahiba Bibi. They are absconding.
“We are also looking for those who had arranged the wedding because she was a minor,” said an officer from the Harishchandrapur police station.
