
Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder, September 1: West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that parents of deceased in RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case have been under “house arrest” by police. Chowdhury who visited the house of the victim spoke to her parents on Saturday alleged that police had offered the father money for cremating the body quickly. “I visited the family of the deceased doctor’s residence and spoke to them for a long time. The police have kept the family under house arrest. They are not allowing them to come out of the house on the pretext of various excuses. The police have created a barricade around them, the CISF have no clue about this,” Chowdhury was quoted as saying by PTI.
In other news, the ruling TMC, opposition BJP and public will take to streets across the state today. Seeking amendment in laws for capital punishment for rapists, women members of the TMC will stage demonstrations in different parts of the state while BJP continues its sit-in at Esplande.
Meanwhile, after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a stringent Central law to deal with heinous crimes like rape and murder, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi in response urged Mamata to expedite the establishment and operationalisation of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) dedicated to handling cases of rape and those under the POCSO Act in the state.
