Seventy-five puja organisers from across Kolkata and adjoining districts paraded their award-winning idols on the Red Road Tuesday to mark the third edition of Durga Puja Carnival, the brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It was followed by a grand immersion of the idols in the Ganga.
Also part of the event were cultural programmes that showcased various art and dance forms. Over 15,000 people turned up, which was also attended by members of different consulates, dignitaries and tourists, officials said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Cabinet ministers, government officials and Bengali film stars also witnessed the grand celebrations which lasted for four hours.
Popular Durga puja committee Sreebhumi Sporting Club kick-started the carnival showcasing a replica of the famous Chittor Fort in Rajasthan. Performers, dressed in red Rajasthani attires, danced to the tunes of Sanjay Leela Bansali’s 2018 blockbuster film “Padmaavat”.
Salt Lake’s FD Block Puja committee in its tableau showcased a mini replica of its Jurassic Park-inspired dinosaur park theme. Around 26 women ISKCON devotees danced to the tune of the Durga Puja theme song composed by the chief minister for Suruchi Sangha, another community puja, whose tableau presented some of their art installations as well as the idols.
A number of puja organisers such as Ahiritola Sarbojanin, Tridhara Akalbodhan, Kalighat Sanghasree, Dumdum Park Bharat Chakra, Samajsebi Sangha, Ballygunge Cultural Association, Chetla Agrani and others also took part in the carnival. With PTI Inputs.
