Days after he praised her during a visit to Kolkata,Press Council of India chairman Justice Markandey Katju today said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may be emotional and temperamental at times, but these defects are overshadowed by her other qualities like integrity and devotion.
In an unusual statement titled In Defence of Mamata Banerjee,Katju heaped praise on her. Please compare her with so many other politicians who are involved in so many scams, he said.
No doubt Mamata has some defects, but then who does not have defects? We are all human beings, and no one is perfect. Mamata is sometimes emotional and temperamental, but then these defects are far outshadowed and outweighed by her great qualities… I would much rather prefer an emotional person with high integrity to a seemingly balanced and cool person who is indulging in scams and scandals, overtly or covertly, he said.
Just a month ago,Katju had criticised Banerjee during the cartoon row. Terming the arrest of a professor as totally unacceptable,Katju had advised Banerjee to grow up and understand that she is now a chief minister and not a street fighter.
Today,he said it was totally unfair on the part of some people, including much of the media,to only highlight her defects while totally overlooking her great qualities of integrity and devotion to serving the people of Bengal.
Suggesting ways to revive the economy of Bengal,he urged Mamata Behen to set up a task force to frame an overall, balanced scheme for reviving sick industries, setting up new ones, and modernising agriculture.
