Joint ‘Error’ Examination concludes amid powercuts

Wrong question papers, fake candidates and powercuts marred the Joint Entrance Examination 2010,conducted on Sunday for admissions to various medical and engineering colleges in the state.

Wrong question papers, fake candidates and powercuts marred the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2010,conducted on Sunday for admissions to various medical and engineering colleges in the state.

Instead of the JEE papers, question papers of Calcutta University Part III Hons examination were reportedly sent to the Andul Gramyahitkari Girls High School in Howrah. The anomaly came to the fore this morning after teachers opened the trunk containing the CU papers.

The JEE examination began half an hour late after the correct question papers were brought to the centre from the police station.

A team from the University of Calcutta was sent to the examination venue to check if the CU question papers had been opened at the school.

“The CU and JEE question papers were stored at the same local police station. According to the police, our question papers have not been opened even as the trunk was unlocked,” said Debasish Biswas,Controller of Examinations,CU,adding that despite the incident, the BA/BSc/BCom part III Hons examination will begin on the earlier scheduled date of April 20.

Meanwhile,a candidate on a fake identity was arrested from an examination centre at Birati in North 24 Parganas. The photograph of the candidate did not match with the one on the admit card and while the age mentioned on the admit card was 17 years, the accused was 30 years old, said an officer probing the matter.

“We have the CD containing the details of the candidate and the admit card hologram. The candidate in question could not correctly tell the details of his school and parents. He has been taken to Nimta police station for inquiry,” said Siddhartha Datta, chairman,Joint Entrance Examination Board, adding that the JEE Board has taken several steps to check fake candidates and make the system foolproof.

At the Bidhanagar Municipal School in Salt Lake, load shedding during exam hours forced 484 students to take the examination in darkness. The examination began at 9.30 am and power was restored only after 12.

“We wrote the examination in darkness. The classroom where we wrote the examination was located on the ground floor and it was dark,” said Raka Chakraborty,a candidate who took the exam at the centre.

The JEE Board said the load shedding occurred due to a local fault.
