In the wake of recent seizures of fake currency notes,Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh will be holding a high-level meeting at Writers’ Buildings on September 13 to devise ways to tackle the menace.
Apart from the chief secretary, other officials who have been asked to attend the meeting are DGP Naparajit Mukherjee,Commissioner of Police Ranjit Pachnanda, ADG (CID) B V Thambi, officials of IB and senior officials of Reserve Bank of India.
In recent days, fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of face value Rs 69.55 lakh have been seized from various parts of the state and the number of people arrested in this connection has reached to 20. As many as 13 cases have been registered.
What is alarming is that we have been able to seize some amount of money but we cannot claim we have seized all, said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
According to the police, what is quite alarming is FICN are getting into ATMs of various banks. There have been cases of people getting fake notes through ATM counters and this cannot happen without the connivance of people inside. So what needed is constant surveillance,” the officer added.
