HC seeks data on those booked for polluting air

The Calcutta High Court on Friday sought information about the number of cases registered against vehicles in Kolkata for polluting air since September 2008.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday sought information about the number of cases registered against vehicles in Kolkata for polluting air since September 2008.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Shankar Prasad Mitra asked the state government to file an affidavit stating what kind of cases were registered against the vehicles for violating the legal provision on auto-emission.

Environmentalist Subhas Dutta had filed a petition in 2002 alleging that the state government had failed to check air pollution by auto emission at night in Kolkata and its surrounding areas. Filing an affidavit last year the state government said that it had installed sophisticated devices at 17 points in the city to measure the pollution level by auto emission.

The state government as well as the police had registered cases against those vehicles for polluting the air through auto emissions. Dutta today pleaded that it was not clear how many cases were registered against the vehicles.
