Designer Suneet Varma talks about dressing up the star cast of Kites
In the summer of 2008,when Delhi designer Suneet Varma showcased his collection in Singapore,there was one Indian couple in the audience in particular,who were quite taken by the clothes on the ramp. Rakesh Roshan and his wife Pinky,a client of Varmas,met him after the show,asking him if he would like to be a part of their upcoming home production. I was a bit surprised since hes a big producer in Bollywood and a film with Hrithik Roshan would mean a huge venture. He took my contact details and,a few weeks later,called me in India. I was signed on for Kites on our first meeting itself, says Varma,who is in Innsbruck,Austria now,working on his next collection of clutches for luxury brand Judith Leiber.
Even though both Hrithik and Ranaut have a reputation for being finicky about the kind of ensembles they want for a movie,Varma says he had a smooth working relation with them. I did work with the brief of the script and the characters,but was given a free hand. We discussed the looks with director Anurag Basu and Mr Roshan and then I took the final call. Kangana is stylish without even knowing it and has an amazing sense of humour. Barbara can look sexy even in a gunny bag! I spent a lot of time with Hrithik in Mumbai,Los Angeles and Santa Fe,just walking around,discovering the cities,eating on side streets. He is a calm,intelligent person. We have become close friends, says Varma.
Post the release of the film,tentatively slated for next week,Varma is looking forward to his other projects on hand. Theres the Leiber collection to do and the couture week in Delhi in mid-July. Afterwards,hopefully,another project with Hrithik, he says.
