Great admission rush begins in Kolkata

It’s that time of the year again. With students making a rush to fill application forms for undergraduate courses and new subjects being introduced,all of Kolkata seems to be buzzing with the ‘A’ (admission) word.

ASUTOSH COLLEGE

Asutosh College,which offers 10 humanities courses,15 science courses and one management course,received nearly 35,000 applications from around 15,000 applicants. Each candidate can submit more than one application form. The forms,each costing Rs 100,will be sold till June 13.

“We provide three modes of applications – physical distribution from the counters on campus,online application,and downloading the form from the website. We are starting a PG Environmental Science Honours course this year,” says Dr Dipak Kumar Kar,principal.

One problem Kolkata colleges often face is that students from science backgrounds who make it to the merit lists for different courses vacate the seats after the JEE results come out.

“First,second,third,and even a fourth list is put out if vacancies need to be filled,” says Dr Kar.

ST XAVIER’S COLLEGE

The same provision exists for St Xavier’s College,which tries to delay its examinations and results for science students.

St Xavier’s College has started new courses in Microbiology and BMM in Multimedia and Animation from this academic session. However,the maximum number of applications are for BCom,BBA,English,and Physics courses

“We received 8,000 online applications for BCom this year. Each year,we receive a total of around 26,000 applications across all courses,out of which 2200 students enrolled,” says Fr J.Felix Raj,Dean of St Xavier’s College.

LADY BRABOURNE

Lady Brabourne College offers 290 seats across 10 different BA Honours subjects and 250 seats across nine different B.Sc subjects. The forms,each costing Rs 80,are available till June 15,after which interviews will be conducted and merit lists will be prepared by June 26. Each applicant can apply in a maximum of four subjects.

SCOTTISH CHURCH

For Scottish Church College,application forms,each costing Rs 100,can be submitted till June 15. After admission tests and interviews,the final lists are up by June 25. The college offers Honours in BSc,BBA,and BA,as well as a BEd course.

PRESIDENCY COLLEGE

Presidency College offers a total of 526 seats across 18 BA/BSc courses. Each application form costs Rs 50 and online application submissions close on June 10.

Admission tests will be held between June 14 and June 19 and the merit lists will be put up on July 4. The college has a special provision for vacant seat. Vacant seats will be declared on July 22 and counselling and admission will take place on July 25,depending on the requirement.
