Govt moves SC against CBI probe order into TMC worker’s death

The West Bengal government has moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s directive to the CBI for taking over the probe into a Trinamool Congress worker's death

The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s directive to the CBI for taking over the probe into a Trinamool Congress worker’s death, allegedly in the custody of state police.

A vacation Bench led by Justice A K Patnaik posted the matter for Monday after the government sought an early hearing of the appeal, which has sought quashing of the HC order.

The petition has also contested the strictures passed by the HC against the investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police and contended that there was nothing on record to substantiate the allegations of improper probe.

Listing a clutch of queries which were reportedly not addressed by the CID during the probe, the HC had last month directed the state to hand over the matter to the CBI for inquiring into the custodial death of Kazi Nasiruddin,a Trinamul Congress supporter,at Dhaniakhali in Hooghly in January. Nasiruddin died allegedly due to police excesses after he was picked up by the personnel for allegedly not possessing documents required for the vehicle he was driving.

The state government had subsequently handed the probe to the CID but a PIL was moved in the HC,demanding a CBI inquiry.

It was alleged that his death was a pre-planned murder since he was on the verge of quitting the Trinamool Congress.
