GJM swings between BJP and Congress

As the Lok Sabha polls draw closer, the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) is juggling its options, saying it is open to supporting any party that backs its longstanding demand for a separate Gorkhaland.

As the Lok Sabha polls draw closer, the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) is juggling its options, saying it is open to supporting any party that backs its longstanding demand for a separate Gorkhaland. The GJM had earlier decided on not fielding its own candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

During their recent 15-day stay in New Delhi, top GJM leaders met senior BJP leaders, including L K Advani and Rajnath Singh, and later said the meetings have been “cordial”. The Gorkha leaders also met Keshav Rao,the AICC general secretary in-charge of West Bengal.

“Why should we not meet Rao or anybody else from the Congress party? After all,we are involved in tripartite talks with the Congress-led UPA government. In the end,it’s sincerity from the national party regarding Gorkhaland that we are looking at. It doesn’t matter which party it is. However,we will have nothing to do with the CPM or any Left party,” a senior GJM leader said.

Following their return from Delhi,Morcha president Bimal Gurung and his entourage have been camping at Garubathan on the Darjeeling-Jalpaiguri border, waiting for a chance to enter the Dooars.
