A schoolgirl died after being allegedly hit by her teacher for not being able to write the national anthem.

The incident occurred on Thursday in Andal Girls’s High School in Burdwan when the students of fifth grade were asked to write the national anthem. Babli Ghosh (11) was asked by her class teacher,Rekha Bhagat,to write it on the black board.

Police sources said when she could not complete the anthem, she was hit by the teacher who threw a duster at her. They said Ghosh fainted upon being hit and was taken to the nearby hospital but she succumbed on the way.

As the news of her death spread, parents staged a demonstration and demanded the teacher’s arrest. “The parents feared their children too might suffer the same fate,” Tapati Bhattacharya, the headmistress of the school, said adding the managing committee has decided to keep the school closed till the teacher was arrested.

Bhagat did not come to school on Friday.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family has lodged a complaint with the Andal police. Babli was a resident of Barasat and had been staying with her uncle for her education.

“The teacher is absconding. Investigations are on and we hope to get her soon,” said Joy Biswas, the sub-divisional police officer at Durgapur.

“We are traumatised. How can a teacher do this? We want the teacher to be punished,” said Sibendra Nath Ghosh, the victim’s father.
