Gagsters Ball

Taking a break from anchoring the 16th Annual Nokia Star Screen Awards 2010 — and from taking digs at each other — hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor presented the Award for the Best Jodi. Just as Amitabh Bachchan was returning to his seat, after collecting the trophy along with his son and co-star Abhishek, the hosts stopped the winners. Reason: Khan wanted to learn Amitabh’s “Auro dance” from Paa while Kapoor asked for an “Aurograph”. As the four movie-world luminaries matched movements for the Auro dance, the evening got one of its memorable moments.

After this incredible sequence,Khan and Kapoor went off stage. First, they spotted Imtiaz Ali in the audience and asked him: “How come every time Rishi Kapoor reminisces about his younger days in Love Aaj Kal,he becomes Saif Ali Khan?” Before the laughter died down,Shah Rukh coaxed Vidhu Vinod Chopra to shout “shut up” three times. Finally,he pulled up Vishal Bhardwaj for making films with non-family friendly titles like Kaminey .

The evening’s entertainment quotient soared magically with the duo’s gags. The evening belonged to them as much as it did to the awardees, performers and the celebrity guests. While it was Kapoor who kick-started the show with a spoof of his Guddu and Charlie act in Kaminey,Khan made a late entry for the final segment. But he was quick to lift the mood at the event with his spontaneity and energy as well as in establishing why he is known as the best anchor.

Before him,R Madhavan,Omi Vaidya and Neha Dhupia — all first-timers at the Screen Awards — handled the task of keeping the guests entertained, between the presentations of trophies, with their wisecracks.

Compared with Khan,Kapoor is new to hosting shows of such magnitude. Though the 28-year-old admitted to being nervous before the show started,he never showed it on stage. In fact, once the event ended,Kapoor said,“This is the most experimental thing I have done in my career. A lot of it was impromptu as I got the script only the day before the ceremony.” During the event, the young actor made a perfect imitation of Vaidya’s hilarious “Balatkar” speech from 3 Idiots ,mimicked Aamir Khan’s mannerisms and acted all geeky and goofy.

With the industry’s top-grosser,3 Idiots, grabbing 10 awards as well as the public imagination,it was only natural that the anchors too would bring in more of the film’s flavour to the show. And that was done by Madhavan and Vaidya, who play major roles in the film. The pair’s Marathi-Bihari act was made funnier with spoofs of Paa’s Mudi mudi and Delhi-6’s Masakali tracks.

“This is the most unnerving thing I have ever done. I have a long way to go before I can be a perfect presenter,” said Madhavan. For Vaidya, the job posed a challenge of a different kind. Between collecting his trophies — for Most Promising Newcomer Male and Best Actor in Comic Role — the 27-year-old had to perform, anchor and change costumes. The briefest appearance among the hosts was made by Dhupia, but she sizzled in a midnight-blue one-shoulder dress.
