Eight Trinamool workers held for Sunia violence

The East Midnapore police arrested eight Trinamool Congress workers from different villages.

The East Midnapore police arrested eight Trinamool Congress workers from different villages on Thursday in connection with the Wednesday’s violence at Sunia in which two persons —one eache from CPM and rival Trinamool — were killed.

Ashoke Biswas,Superintendent of Police,East Midnapore, said that the Trinamool workers were arrested from Sunia,Chanberia and Kunjapur villages in connection with the murders of a CPM and a Trinamool supporter.

Locals attribute the clashes that began on Wednesday to a renewed turf war between the two political parties at Sunia. Today clashes also broke out in Contai between Trinamool and CPM supporters during the bandh called by the Left parties to protest the killing of CPM activist on Wednesday.

The CPM held a rally at Contai on Thursday morning to enforce the bandh. On the other hand, the Trinamool too held a rally to oppose the bandh and a clash broke out between the supporters of both the parties.

The Trinamool workers allegedly pelted stones at CPM cadres and attacked their leaders, said CPM district committee member of East Midnapore Prasanta Patra. Patra claimed that four local CPM leaders were injured in today’s clash.

Trinamool leaders, however, alleged that they had been attacked by CPM supporters. Biswas said that two persons were injured in the clash at Contai today. The police intervened to bring the situation under control.

A large contingent of police force was rushed to the spot to disperse the mob,he said. The situation is now under control and the Section 144 of the Cr PC that was clamped is on,he added.
