Drama Dossier

There are fashion shows — leggy models, groovy music, stunning showstoppers et al. And then there are Rohit Bal shows.

If there was one word to describe Rohit Bal’s concluding show at KFW,it would be – spectacular!

There are fashion shows — leggy models, groovy music, stunning showstoppers et al. And then there are Rohit Bal shows. The Kolkata Fashion Week finale sure had fireworks going for it,what with word out that the current toast of Hindi filmdom,John Abraham will bring down the curtains on the four-day long show. But halfway through his couture-charisma blitzkrieg, you wonder if the enfant terrible of Indian fashion at all needed stardust for his show to be the showstopper of the lot. A fashionably late start (two hours to be precise,as Bal wanted the ramp and the décor to be redone),some fun bonding with the shutterbugs, spectacular music — Bal,the showman, was in all his elements at the concluding show of KFW.

Which brings us to his collection. Titled Raat,it was high on drama. “I wanted a Gothic, bold feel to the collection,” says Bal. Which explains the pieces of black chart paper strewn on the ramp, the dark smoky eyes of the models, and the designer’s colour palette which revolved around blacks, bronze and deep purple.

“I really like the brooding, doped Vampire-like look. Something I wanted to recreate in my clothes,” he says. His women’s collection was dominated by gowns, billowy, voluminous skirts in tulle, crepe, silk and velvet. Bal’s recreation of Japanese origami work which translated into delicate folds in velvet and crepe that took on shapes of flowers were the stars of the show. Knee-length dresses with opulent, almost Victorian detailing around the collars also caught our eyes. A silk and crepe gown,in purple and black with giant crepe roses also deserves mention. The men’s collection however didn’t hold water to the women’s collection. However, the velvet jackets, coats and sherwanis with intricate colourful threadwork stood out amid the rest.

Post the show,Bal,John Abraham at his side, was at his effusive best. While you can’t pride the Kolkata media with the most cerebral posers, you could trust Bal to field the most preposterous question with characteristic wit. Sample this:

Reporter (who doesn’t of course see or realize what is most obvious): John, would you wear this dress to some event?

Bal: Sorry,for interrupting,but this isn’t a dress. It’s called a sherwani… come on,you’re a man!

Reporter (starry eyed and mooning): John, what do you like wearing?

Bal: Sorry to interrupt again, but dear lady,do you at all care what he is wearing or if he is wearing anything at all?
