Doctor found hanging in pvt path lab loo, kin say ‘foul play’

Adhikary’s family members said they suspect that he could have been killed and hanged.

A 33-year-old assistant professor at the Kolkata National Medical College was found hanging with a scarf around his neck in the bathroom of a private pathological laboratory, police said Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday night they said. Dr Kaliprasad Adhikary, a resident of Gopalnagar village under Md Bazar police station in Birbhum district, used to attend the clinic at a private pathological laboratory on Sundays.

He reached the lab Saturday night where the owner, Samsuddin Ahmed found him hanging from the bathroom shower with a muffler at about 11 pm.

Ahmed took him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. He later informed the Rampurhat police station and Adhikary’s family. His mother and sister arrived Saturday night while his wife came from Malda in the morning.

Koteswara Rao, SDPO, Rampurhat, said that Adhikary should not have been brought down by Ahmed. “They should have informed the police first. As per the preliminary investigations, some people upon finding the bathroom shut from inside, broke open the door and found him hanging. They instinctively brought him down and took him to the hospital,” Rao said.

He also said that prima facie it looked like a case of suicide but a concrete statement can be made after the postmortem report arrived. “There has been no complaint filed by his family so far. Police have started a suo motu investigation into the matter,” he said, adding the body had been handed over to family members after the autopsy.

Adhikary’s family members said they suspect that he could have been killed and hanged. They said they were waiting for the postmortem report before putting in a formal complaint.
