An exhibition on the life and works of English naturalist Charles Darwin is on at the British Council stall at the Book Fair and is attracting a stream of people.
The exhibition explores Darwins life,his ground-breaking theory and the continuing relevance of his ideas today. It also sheds light on the contemporary reactions to Darwins theories of evolution and how fields as diverse as geology and economics influenced his thinking, said Sujata Sen,director,British Council,Kolkata.
Through this exhibition,British Council is seeking to engage new audiences,to make Darwins theory of evolution relevant to their lives,and to encourage involvement and debate. The exhibition will also look at the impact of Darwins ideas and their impact on contemporary biology,medicine and society, said Sen.
On Saturday,Dame Gillian Beer,King Edward VII Professor Emeritus at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature,will deliver a lecture on Darwins Curiosity at the Book Fair. The exhibition and the lecture are parts of a year-long programme of activities on Darwin.
