CPM pulls out candidates from 2 municipalities

Cites attacks,intimidation by 'Trinamool goons'

The CPM withdrew all its candidates from two municipality areas in Burdwan and Nadia as election to 12 municipalities in nine districts were held Saturday.

It cited attacks and criminal intimidation by the ruling Trinamool Congress party for withdrawing its candidates several hours into the elections from the 21 seats of Chakda municipality in Nadia and 35 seats of Burdwan municipality.

CPM district secretary,Burdwan,Amol said,“People were not allowed to cast their votes. They (Trinamool workers) attacked our candidates. The ruling party captured all the booths. We submitted our complaints to the police and administration so that they take action,however,no step was taken. We have boycotted the polls and withdrawn our candidates.”

Meanwhile,sporadic clashes took place at Panihati in North-24 Parganas during the elections,prompting the district CPM leadership to seek a redpoll there.

“The election was not allowed to take place. Goons of the ruling party destroyed several EVM machines,too. We demand a repoll at the municipality,“ said CPM district secretary Gautam Deb.

Clashes were also reported from Burdwan,Guskara and Chakda with armed miscreants firing and trying to snatch EVMs from a polling booth at Habra in North-24 Parganas.

Till the last report came in,the polling rate was 81 per cent in 12 municipalities.
