Days after accusing the CPM of having a hand in the Sangrampur hooch deaths, the ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday alleged the opposition party was conspiring with the Maoists to “destabilise” the state government.
It began with Public Health Engineering Minister Subrata Mukherjee alleging in the Assembly that the CPM “spread a rumour” in Dongaria village in South 24 Parganas on Wednesday that a water tank, which serves at least 15 lakh people, had been poisoned and anybody who drank from it would die.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee then took over from Mukherjee. “Subratada is a senior minister. There is a basis to his accusations. From hooch deaths to rumour-mongering,the CPM has indulged in a dangerous game. They, along with Maoists, are hatching a conspiracy to destabilise the government,” she told reporters. “But we will not tolerate it. If anything untoward happens, the Marxists will have to bear the responsibility.”
The CPM trashed the allegations and dared Mamata to prove them if she was truthful. “It is a politics of poison and the chief minister herself is the author of this murky politics. The ruling party should either withdraw the allegations or prove them, and if that is not done we will stall proceedings of the Assembly tomorrow,” Leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra said.
More than 170 people died from drinking spurious liquor at Sangrampur in South 24 Parganas on December 17. The next day,Partha Chatterjee,Commerce and Industries Minister, alleged the CPM had masterminded the “whole thing” and caused the deaths.
Meanwhile, after she was done attacking the CPM,the chief minister listed her efforts in the past six months to rein in the UPA government at the Centre.
“We have stalled the hike in the petroleum prices. We also stalled FDI in retail. And we have also blocked pension Bill. All these measures will bring relief to the people,” she said.
