The West Bengal Pradesh Congress has urged the Trinamool government to consider a “partial reduction in state taxes on petrol to provide some relief to consumers”.

In a press statement today,WBPCC president Pradip Bhattarcharya requested the political parties in the state to “see reason and act in a more responsible way”.

Bhattacharya said the decision to increase the price of petrol was to sail over the financial crisis and not to compromise on the development programmes for the poor.

He criticised the state government’s move of taking populist measures and simultaneously asking funds from the Centre for developmental projects. “This shows the dichotomy in policy matters in most of the political parties.”

Bhattacharya said in 2011-12 alone, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 8,700 crore as backward region development grant to Bengal.
