Members of the West Bengal Mahila Congress Committee, along with other senior Congress leaders, took out a procession on Saturday protesting violence against women in the state. They also demanded to know why the culprits of Park Street rape were not convicted as yet and why CBI inquiries into cases like Piyali Mukherjees death and the Saradha Group scam were not initiated by the state government.
Mahila Congress Committee national president said Mamata Banerjee, before she became the chief minister, had raised her voice against the atrocities by the CPI(M). So people had voted for her with a lot of expectations but they find themselves betrayed. The BPL cards, which had become the property of CPM cadres, are now held by TMC supporters. The people who deserve the cards were and are still deprived, she said.
She added that Bengal contributed 13 per cent of the total crime committed against women in India and is at number three nationally.
She called it a shame because the chief minister is herself a woman.
Referring to the Food Security Bill, she said,It was a dream of the Central government that no one should sleep hungry but the state government failed to implement the bill in Bengal. There are several projects that the Centre had framed for all states, irrespective of which party is ruling the state, but improper implementation at the state level has led to failures. In Bengal, there are no proper school and hospital facilities. The poor are growing poorer and the ministers are growing richer, she said, citing the example of Saradha scam.
Taking a dig at CMs performance review meeting held Friday, senior Congress leader Manas Bhuniya said: Mamata herself holds the police, minority, health and land departments. How many points should she be rated with?
He added: I will request Dr Shakil Ahmed Khan and Sobha Ojha to give the message to the central leadership that there should not be any alliance with the TMC and we should be allowed to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections alone, he said.
State Congress president Pradeep Bhattacharya said that female victims of violence in the state do not find the chief minister beside them.
He also accused the TMC of buying leaders of other parties. They are spending crores of rupees from the party funds to buy MLAs and councillors of the opposition parties. This will not take them anywhere. We will contest in all the 42 seats in the Lok Sabha polls and we will see how the TMC wins, he said.
Referring to the Saradha scam,he said the kingpin Sudipta Sen had bought the CMs picture for Rs 1.86 crore, indicating that the CM had full knowledge of the scam. If Picasso was alive,he would have gone to Nabanna and Kalighat to meet the CM and get some tips on painting, he said.
