Civic polls: Cracks show in Cong-Trinamool alliance

Despite the Congress high command and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee talking of a comprehensive alliance for the upcoming municipal polls in Bengal, cracks have already appeared at the grassroots level.

Despite the Congress high command and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee talking of a comprehensive alliance for the upcoming municipal polls in Bengal, cracks have already appeared at the grassroots level.

The first case where triangular fight is almost sure is Ranaghat municipality in Nadia district.

Shankar Singh, the district president of Nadia Congress, today said if Banerjee gives ticket to even one of the councillors who have defected from the Congress recently, there will be absolutely no alliance.

Yesterday, after meeting with district Trinamool leaders,Banerjee had decided to give tickets to 16 councillors, including chairman of Ranaghat municipality Partha Pratim Chatterjee, who recently defected from the Congress to join the Trinamool.

Singh has raised the issue with Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee in Delhi. “We cannot go to the people and ask for votes for those who left our party. We are ready to field candidates in all 19 seats in the municipality and are confident of winning,” said Singh over phone from Delhi.
