City outshines dists in IIT results

Students from Kolkata outshone those from the districts in the IIT entrance examination,the results of which were declared today.

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination results showed the opposite trend,with district students performing better than city students.

This year,around 5 lakh candidates appeared for the IIT test from Kharagpur zone,of whom 3,000 qualified and 180 students ranked within 500.

Dibtarka Hait,who was 16th in West Bengal JEE,ranked 69th in IIT. He wants to study basic science abroad. He has cracked the SAT and will specialise in chemistry from the second semester at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),USA.

Anusha Chowdhury,13th in WBJEE,ranked 250 in IIT. She wants to study computer science at IIT Kanpur. Her favourite subjects are chemistry and mathematics. Her pastimes include reading books and listening to music.

Aditya Bhutra,169th in IIT,wants to study computer science from one of the IITs. He studies eight to nine hours a day.

Asim Kumar Mohanty,chairman of IIT-JEE,said the decision to rank all students was taken after it was found that many seats remained vacant after counselling. In 2011,around 90 seats remained vacant in various IITs. With limited seats of around 10,000 in the IITs,students who have secured lower ranks may now apply in maritime universities or IISER.

According to data collected from IIT Kharagpur,341 students scored within 10,000 rank from Bengal and six of them ranked within 100 from the eastern region.
