City gets ready for festival of lights

With just a day to go for Kali Puja – the festival of lights – Kolkatans have become busy purchasing new and different varieties of crackers. And thanks to the Baji Bazaar, organised by the Burrabazaar Fire Works Dealers’ Association (BFWDA),they can select from a wide range of crackers without visiting many places.

The bazaar, near Sahid Minar at Maidan, offers a whole new range of fire crackers along with the age-old sparklers and a few sound crackers. However, with the decibel limit set at 90 by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, this year will see more fire crackers than those which emit sound.

Aggrieved by the reduced decibel limit for Bengal,Sanjay Dutta, secretary of the BFWDA,said: “We had to dismantle many of the sound crackers this year. There should be an equal decibel limit for the entire country. We had to incur huge losses for the disparity. We could not bring any cracker from outside Bengal nor could we send our cracker to other parts of the country.”

The city buyers, though upset, are ready to adhere to this reduced decibel limit. “This year we are mainly purchasing crackers that emit light rather than sound,” said a customer at the Baji Bazaar.

The reduced decibel limit and strict vigilance by the police has, however, made the youngsters unhappy. “Kali Puja is the festival of lights and sounds. But we are not allowed to burst crackers that exceed the 90 decibel limit, whereas, the rest of India can enjoy bursting crackers that is within 125 decibel,” said Abhishek Roy,a college student.
